    ACCT AmeriCorps Environmental Stewards Summer Program

    Summer Program Members serve for 8-10 weeks on projects that vary from water monitoring, coordinating the creation of outdoor classrooms, conducting outreach, organizing festivals and focusing on the ACCT’s five core goals.The OSM/VISTA Summer Programs supplement the work of the OSM/VISTA Teams by placing Summer Program Members with watershed/community improvement groups across the country.  

    The Summer Program launched in 2007. During the first three years of the program, the ACCT placed a total of 83 positions within the seven states of the Appalachian region. In 2010, a total of 75 Summer Program Members served across 13 states (PA, OH, MD, VA, WV, KY,TN, IN,IL, IA, AL, CO and NM) and the District of Columbia. These 2010 Summer Program Members logged a total of 23,694 service hours—more than 11 years of full time work. Thanks to the dedication of all Summer Program Members and their sponsoring organizations the Summer Programs have been a great success.

October Grants

    FOCUS WV Request for Proposal Now Available - Due November 14, 2011

    The Northern West Virginia Brownfields Assistance Center (NBAC) at West Virginia University is seeking communities that would like to apply for up to $5,000 in brownfield redevelopment assistance from the Foundations for Overcoming Challenges and Utilizing Strengths West Virginia (FOCUS WV) Program. This grant program, funded by the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, began in 2009 to redevelop brownfields sites across the state and has funded 32 community projects for a total of $268,000.

    The FOCUS WV Brownfields program helps communities create a redevelopment vision for brownfield properties of strategic community interest. Activities eligible for funding include conducting environmental site assessments, holding community meetings, and identifying and involving project stakeholders.

    The deadline to apply to the program is November 14th, 2011.


November Grants

    Appalachian Community Foundation General Fund - Due Novermber 5, 2011

    The Appalachian Community Foundation is a nonprofit grantmaking organization that provides resources and support to grassroots organizations working to overcome the underlying causes of poverty and injustice in Appalachia.

    The ACF makes grants on a yearly basis from the General Fund Program which is supported by a combination of unrestricted funds and monies from the Alexander Fund of the New York Community Trust. ACF's General Fund is an annual board-directed program focusing on organizing for social change and is monies organizations may use for general support as well as for programs and projects

    Eligible organizations must show evidence of working for social change through one or more of the following:

    • Organizing and action led by people working to control their own lives.
    • Educating communities about the root causes of oppression and injustice.
    • Eliminating barriers to full participation in society (i.e. racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, ageism, able-ism, and exclusion from decision-making processes).
    • Focusing on efforts to change cultural, social, political, and economic systems and institutions that accommodate and perpetuate social injustice.
    • Creating and modeling democratic cultural, social, political and economic systems.
    • Connecting local issues with national and global concerns.
    • Networking, collaborating, and cooperating with other change agents working toward similar goals.

    FY2012 Brownfields Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund and Cleanup Grant Guidelines - Request for Proposals - Due November 28, 2011

    These grants may be used to address sites contaminated by petroleum and hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants (including hazardous substances co-mingled with petroleum). Opportunities for funding are as follows: Brownfields Assessment Grants (each funded up to $200,000 over three years; coalitions are funded up to $1,000,000 over three years), Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) Grants (each funded up to $1,000,000 over five years) and Brownfields Cleanup Grants (each funded up to $200,000 over three years). The proposal deadline is November 28, 2011.
